US citizen Siamak Namaj is back in an Iranian prison today after being temporarily released by authorities in Tehran earlier this month.
“His furlough, which began on Oct. 1, was renewable and had already been renewed once on Oct. 8,” Namadji’s pro bono attorney Jared Genther explained in a statement released this morning. Late (Tehran time), Siamak was detained by the IRGC and deported to Evin Prison.”

When he was released earlier this month, Iran claimed through state media that it was proof of the regime’s “good faith”.
Namadji, now 50, has been in custody since 2015 after being convicted in Iran on espionage charges.

Namadji’s 85-year-old father Bakeru, also held in Iran, was only given permission to leave the country for treatment last week.
In a statement today, Siamak’s brother Babak Namaj said, “For the first time, I sincerely hope that my father’s departure will be the beginning of a new, less painful chapter in our struggle to make our family whole again. But Siamak’s return to Evin dashed that hope.โ

Asked about Namji’s extradition to prison today, State Department spokesman Ned Price said it was a “tremendous setback” and added, “Siamak Namazi and others unjustly detained in Iran of Americans are being detained for wrongful reasons.
