Ukraine’s capital region was hit by an Iranian-made kamikaze drone on Thursday morning as Russian forces stepped up their attacks on the country.
Residents of Kyiv Oblast have been awakened by blazing air raid sirens for the fourth day in a row this week. Rescuers were seen rushing to the site of Thursday’s strike.
According to Kyiv regional governor Oleksiy Kleva, the strike was reportedly carried out somewhere along the perimeter of the capital. The number of casualties is unknown, but the deputy head of the president’s office, Kirilo Tymoshenko, told Telegram that “important infrastructure” in the region had been affected.
The southern city of Mykolaiv was also attacked overnight by Russian forces, with artillery fire destroying a five-story apartment building in the city.

Mykolaiv mayor Oleksandr Schenkovich said the top two floors of the building were completely destroyed in one attack. No casualties were reported from the attack.
The attack on Kyiv was a rare event until Monday’s devastating strikes hit the capital at least four times, killing at least 19 people and wounding more than 100 across the country.
The attacks come amid heightened tensions between Ukraine and Russia since the annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions by President Vladimir Putin.

Iran’s Shahed-136 drones are increasingly being used by the Russian military to destabilize Ukraine. The Ukrainian military said it was able to shoot down dozens of drones and Russian missiles through its air defense systems this week.
Western leaders have pledged to send air defense systems and weapons to Ukraine as Russia’s deadly attacks on Ukraine continue. President Biden said earlier this week that Russia had made a “grave” miscalculation by invading Ukraine.
