British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce his resignation on Thursday.
Sources at 10 Downing Street have confirmed to Fox News that Johnson will announce his resignation today. Sources said they were expecting a statement from London time this afternoon.
Several people, including his two recent cabinet appointments, have called on him to resign in an ethical scandal, and dozens of ministers of his government have resigned this week.
Johnson appointed British Treasury Secretary Nadim Zahawi this week and asked Johnson to resign 36 hours later. He said the “right thing” was to “go right now.”
Education Minister Michelle Donelan, who was appointed Tuesday following the resignation of his predecessor, announced his resignation Thursday morning.
Both were appointed to their short positions after their predecessors resigned.
A group of Johnson’s most credible cabinet ministers visited him on Wednesday at his office in Downing Street and told him to stand up after losing the trust of his party. However, Johnson chose to fight for his political career instead and fired one of the cabinet bureaucrats, British media reported.
By Thursday, five ministers had resigned and more than 50 employees had left since the recent scandal. Johnson has been accused of lying about not knowing about his groping allegations against the man he appointed as senior government minister.
