The Texas police union has condemned a judge’s decision to set bail for two men who were accused of killing an off-duty police officer while out on bail in a previous murder.
Ahsim Taylor Jr. and Jayland Womack were arrested Friday in the shooting death of Harris County Third Precinct Deputy Omar Ursin on August 28. Ursin, who was off duty, was shot dead while going to dinner for his family.
Two suspects were already out on bail on unrelated murder charges at the time of their arrest. While Taylor Jr.’s previous murder charge involved a failed car sale, Womack’s murder charge stemmed from selling drugs.
Judge Dennis Collins on Monday increased Taylor’s bail to $2 million for murder and $1 million for tampering with evidence. Womack’s bail was increased to $2 million for his murder charges.

The Houston Police Union has criticized the judge’s decision to post bail on the murder suspect.
“This proves that risk assessment is not an issue in Harris County,” the police union wrote on Twitter.
“These two men are a threat to public safety whether they have bail or not,” the tweet continued. Now have they killed again and been granted bail again?”

“They violated their bail conditions. This is the third person we know they have killed,” the Houston Police Union added.
Prosecutors are urging Judge Collins not to release the suspect even if bail is posted. The next hearing on this case will be on Friday at 10:00 am.
Investigators believe the shooting that killed Deputy Ursin may have originated in road rage.
