Taiwan’s attorney general has warned of potential Chinese aggression against his country and called on world democracies to help his island nation.
Ambassador James JK Lee, executive director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, said he was “very concerned about the possibility of China’s invasion of Taiwan in the future.”
“China has not renounced the use of force against Taiwan.”
In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Ambassador Li outlined international and domestic efforts to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses in the face of increasing Chinese aggression.
Biden says US will defend Taiwan if China launches ‘unprecedented attack’
“Many military experts estimate different timetables for the likelihood of aggression. But I believe peace can only be maintained through force,” Lee said.
He recently praised President Biden’s display of support for an independent island nation when he said on “60 Minutes” that U.S. forces would help defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack. says the president’s remarks are part of a policy of “strategic ambiguity” intended to throw the Chinese government off balance, but the US’ “one China” policy remains in effect.
“This underscores America’s determination to defend democracy and sends a clear message to Beijing that an ambiguous strategy is heading for clarity in response to China’s threats against Taiwan. ‘ said Lee. “Ukraine would have told us that deterrence is important. Preventive war is very important. Our true success ultimately depends on whether we can win the war with Taiwan. Rather, it measures whether war can be prevented.”
Chang warns Taiwan: US military must be ready for war with China in hours, not years
The Biden administration is also reportedly considering imposing sanctions on China to deter potential aggression.
“Americans should know that the future of Taiwan’s democracy is related to the future of the free world.A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would disrupt the entire region. Rather than seeing it as China’s ultimate goal, it should rather be seen as the first domino in its quest for regional and peace: world domination,” Li said.
China has stepped up its provocations against Taiwan, which it still considers its territory. Recent large-scale military exercises off the coast of Taiwan and fighter jets that continue to encroach on the country’s defense zones are examples of Beijing’s ferocious attacks. The distance separating her two countries across the Taiwan Strait is only about 90 miles, which is roughly the distance from Cuba to Florida.
China updates threats and accusations after US announces formal trade talks with Taiwan
“The United States and Taiwan should use this crisis as a catalyst to move more quickly toward a constructive security partnership,” says Lee. “I hope the freedom-loving, peace-loving nations will unite and support Taiwan when it faces such a huge enemy titan on the other side. We need it.”
Lee also seeks to garner support for his country in New York and expand its role in the United Nations. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly expelled Taiwan in favor of communist China.
Observers say Beijing’s belligerence only backfired, making defending Taiwan a top US priority. Ambassador Li said China’s move has also strengthened the resolve of the Taiwanese people.
“China’s aggressive and coercive approach only strengthens the public’s will to defend democracy and freedom,” he said.
