Sydney Sweeney was away from fitting when she learned that she had been nominated for two Emmy Awards on Tuesday. Silently, the first thing she called was her mother.
“There weren’t many words,” Sweeney said. “It was to cry more and say how proud she was.”
The 24-year-old actress was nominated for two HBO shows, “White Lotus,” which supports a limited-edition actress, and “Euphoria,” which supports a drama actress. She attributed her success at the show to the creation of elaborate books for each character, including her individual backstory and emotional memories.
“I can dive into who they are, and I know how they react to something because of what happened in the past,” she said. rice field. “Because I gave them life through the work I put in, I can flesh out these perfectly vibrant characters.”
As Kathy in Season 2 of “Euphoria,” her character sacrifices her friendship with Maddy (played by Alexa Demie) and focuses on a beauty routine to beat Maddy’s ex-boyfriend Nate (Jacob Elordi). And adopts a wardrobe inspired by country music. (Zendaya, who plays the troubled Lou, has been nominated again for the drama’s best actress.)
Sweeney’s character Olivia from “White Lotus” spent a vacation with her friend Paula (Brittany O’Grady) and it was easy to make a bitter decision at a luxury resort. The limited series has won 20 nominations, including 5 of the Best Supporting Actress Awards.
Details of the 74th Emmy Awards
The 2022 edition of the Emmy Awards, which celebrates television excellence, will take place on September 12th at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
In a telephone interview, Sweeney talked about the thrill of her first Emmy nominee and what viewers can get from Kathy’s arc of transformation. These are edited excerpts from that conversation.
How did you feel when you heard that you received two nominations?
I was definitely shocked because I didn’t expect to be nominated for two awards in particular. The fact that people are impressed with my character makes a lot of sense to me because I am grateful for the characters I can play. I feel great and I am very grateful.
Kathy made a big difference in “Euphoria” last season, falling to Nate and complicating her friendship with Maddy, changing her sympathetic to more suspicious personality. What was the metamorphosis for you?
It was a fun challenge. I was also very nervous because Maddy’s personality is so strong and she knows that people love her. You don’t want to cross Maddy, and Kathy has crossed Maddy. So I was a little nervous to see how people react.
Olivia of “White Lotus” played a much more cartoonish role. Was it rewarding?
I was a little scared because I had never done anything in terms of comedy, and I was surrounded by such comedy geniuses. But whenever I’m scared, it means I’ll be challenged. I’m trying to push myself further. So I was really excited to be surrounded by these people.
Some viewers complained last season that “Euphoria” had sexualized Kathy. What did you do about that criticism, and what do you want people to rob the character of?
I hope people can take a deeper look inside Kathy and see the struggles and traumas she has experienced and why she is her. Because there is a reason behind everything. Does she always want to be there? No. That’s because she thinks others want her. That’s the only way she can get what she wants from people.
I think it shows how women feel and are treated today. I hope it raises the awareness of others and gives us a better idea of how we are perceived and how young girls are raised. And there is also a double side. Because I think there is also a strength behind her feelings when she is naked or when she is showing her body. She communicates that way and has her beauty, strength, and sadness. I hope people can see it.
