Steve Martin When Martin short It’s nothing new to the television industry. Steve Martin won an Emmy in 1969 as a writer for “Smothers Brothers Comedy War”, and Short won two Emmys, including his 1983 work. On “SCTV”.
By Tuesday, they had a total of about 20 Primetime Emmy Awards for works including the Academy Awards (sponsored and written by Martin) and the FX drama “Damage” (Short played an ominous right arm). The nominated Bernie Madov type), and the 2018 variety special “Steve Martin and Martin Short: The Night You Forget Forever”. (Short has also been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award.)
Now they have added new filigrees to their careers. Both Short and Martin were nominated for an Emmy Award for starring in the Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building.”
In a series of alternating Broadway and dark comedy, Martin plays a once-famous television actor, and Short plays the never-great Broadway director who lives in the same Renaissance-style building in Manhattan. With the help of a mysterious young neighbor (Serena Gomez), they try to solve the crime in their dwelling-or at least stuff the mystery into a popular podcast. (Martin, who created “Murder’s in the Building” with John Hoffman, was also nominated for the comedy writing department, and the show received a total of 17 nominations.)
Short and Martin are longtime friends and collaborators (dating back to the 1986 comedy “Three Amigos!”). So you might think they are happy with each other’s success and excited to compete for the Emmy. But their feelings are probably more complicated. They talked together in a video interview on Tuesday. These are edited excerpts from that conversation.
“Only the murderer in the building” was recognized many times today. How do you feel
Steve Martin Well, we are excited. We are excited not only for us but also for the show nominations. We are disappointed that Serena was not nominated because it was so important to our performance.
Martin short She has been nominated As an executive producer..
You both tell history as TV candidates —
Martin I don’t. Marty does.
short Steve, let’s make a joke from the show. Hey, Steve, how many Emmy Awards do you have again?
Martin [thinking] Oh, I want to say five. [pause] Well, I’d like to say five, but there is one. If I win, I will be a roll. It’s been 53 years since my last victory.
short Hey, I don’t want to see what you look like by the time you get your third win. I won twice.
Who is this a big honor?
Martin Oh definitely Marty.
short If I weren’t nominated, I would go to Las Vegas and say I would bet $ 100,000 that Steve would win. However, we tend to think of voting as split a little.
Martin It’s a great honor for everyone. I didn’t work two years ago.
short With that in mind, when I was a kid, I had prime times ABC, NBC, and CBS. And now you have a billion shows — as many shows as my family tells me are just great and I’ve never seen one. Prospering in such an era is pretty great.
Martin Also, I think the comedy acting category needs to be divided into two categories: “too wide” and “too subtle”. Therefore, whatever the nomination is, there are subcategories. Marty was able to beat Overly Broad and I was able to beat WayTooSubtle.
short You can fall into your own category, it’s actually too thin to be light.
Martin They use me as a bounce board when they are doing Marty’s close-ups.
Have you ever participated in a direct competition?
short Just emotionally.
Martin Every minute of every day.
Martin, this is the first continuous series you’ve been involved with for a while. Steve, this is your first continuous series. Is there a way to feel like a rookie?
Martin I was surprised, but I thought the shooting was quite different. I thought I would go ahead with 2 takes and go further with 2 takes. But no, it’s like a movie. I’m shooting for 5 hours in 12 or 14 weeks. The movie is 2 hours in 10 weeks.
In the second season of “Murders in the Building,” we dedicated storylines and episodes to characters other than you. What do you think about retreating and retreating from the series when needed?
Martin We love it. From The Jack Benny Show, I’m grateful to know that he’s always retreating in search of other talents. I know Marty isn’t, but he’s grateful that really talented people came in and did their thing. We had Nathan Lane, he was nominated. Nominated Jane Lynch. Amy Ryan, unfortunately not nominated, she deserved it.
short James Cavalry was great.I’m from an ensemble [on “SCTV”], So I was used to it. If John Candy did great things, you would retreat.
Martin It’s funny because it says it came from an ensemble, but you probably don’t know it today.
short What I mean is that I’m sick of ensembles. And do you know what helped me with this? I was tired of working equally.
Martin Well, it can only be interpreted in one direction.
Will you be able to support each other on the night of the Emmy Awards? Or will it be terrible? Is it each and every one for himself?
Martin I suggested Marty withdraw, but he didn’t give a reason. It’s just a mystery. And he launches a whispering campaign because I have a fatal illness.
short Steve told me last night, and I said: “I don’t fully understand. It seems to help you more than I do.”
Martin I said he would come off like a hero. He is retreating for his friends.
short So what would you do if all this happened and you were sitting there and asked, “And the winner is — Bill Hader?”
Martin [leaping up from his seat] I am okay!
I think the plan will be taken in the right spirit.
short I don’t think it was so bad.
Martin Nothing is received in the right spirit. I tweeted the photo the other day.. They brought me a latte, and they can make these flashy designs — it had my picture on it. I thought this was amazing. Tweet this. Then there is the answer, “If I tweeted this two years ago, I would have enjoyed it, but now I can’t even buy a latte.” [Expletive] you. “
short Please put it in. It symbolizes everything.
