South Korean airlines have canceled all flights to Taiwan as Chinese forces surrounded the island to conduct live-fire exercises on Thursday.
Korean Air has canceled flights to Taiwan through Saturday, while Asiana Airlines has canceled flights through Friday.
China is conducting live-fire military exercises around Taiwan after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island. Pelosi is the highest-level U.S. government official to visit since Newt Gingrich chairman in 1997.
Chinese officials were outraged by her visit, claiming it violated the United States’ one-China policy, which said the United States recognizes but does not condone China’s sovereignty claims over the islands. It also said the United States would not maintain formal diplomatic relations with the Taiwan government.
