As the world tackles the growing food crisis, Moscow and Kieu signed an agreement on Friday to enable the safe export of grains and other foods from Ukraine.
“Today there is a beacon in the Black Sea. A beacon of hope, a beacon of possibility, a beacon of world bailouts that need it more than ever,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters. “The question wasn’t what was good for either side.
“The focus has been on what is most important to the people of our world,” he continued. “And there is no doubt. This is a global consensus.”
Russia’s global food crisis drives 49M into a “crisis” of famine, hunger: expert warning
Officials from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the United Nations have agreed to allow merchant ships to transport cargo through the Black Sea during the deadly war in Russia’s Ukraine.
“Dear ladies, this agreement has not been easy,” said the UN chief.
Guterres did not elaborate on the exact agreement, but said that three Ukrainian ports, Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzny, would be opened in the Black Sea to enable “significant amounts” of food exports. ..
Preliminary talks suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a ceasefire, allowing Ukrainian naval vessels to escort merchant ships.

Ukrainian naval vessels are tasked with clearing water due to explosive land mines. Precautionary measures were needed after about 400 land mines were launched into the Black Sea by Russian troops earlier this year.
Moscow has also accused Kieu of launching its own mine.
Turkey, which has been instrumental in hosting export negotiations, is responsible for inspecting all vessels to alleviate Russia’s concerns about arms smuggling.
The United Nations will also set up an office in Istanbul to monitor security conditions.
“It will bring relief to developing countries at risk of bankruptcy and the most vulnerable people at risk of famine,” Guterres said.
“It will help stabilize world food prices, which were already at record levels before the war. This is a real nightmare for developing countries,” he added.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan joined Guterres at the signing ceremony and called on all political parties to end the war in Ukraine.
“From the beginning we have realized that there is no winner in this war,” he said. “The whole world will suffer, not just the political parties.”
