The Tony Awards bounced off.
According to Nielsen, the 75th Tony Awards attracted 3.9 million viewers at CBS on Sunday night, about one million more than last year’s ceremony.
Rating revival has followed a month-long trend, at least so far, with award shows rebounding from record lows. This year’s Oscar has attracted 16 million viewers, up from last year’s minimum of 10 million viewers. And the Grammy Awards have seen a slight increase in reputation for more than 9 million viewers this year.
Even with the rebound, Sunday’s rating performance was significantly lower than the 5.4 million viewers who focused on the 2019 Tony Awards. This year, the total number of viewers is the second lowest since the record was set.
The Tony Awards may have benefited from returning to the traditional June time frame, where viewers are accustomed to watching the show. Also, competition on Sunday night has dropped significantly, with most broadcast networks being broadcast repeatedly. Last year, Tony’s postponed ceremony aired in September and had to face the Golden Time Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers nail bitters directly.
Sunday’s broadcast of Tony, hosted by Ariana Devose, was an opportunity for Broadway to stage millions of shows at a moment when ticket sales were still declining significantly before the pandemic.
According to Nielsen, New York was the country’s most acclaimed market, with San Francisco and West Palm Beach just behind it.
