A former police sergeant who led a group of police officers who illegally stopped and searched numerous people and vehicles and stole thousands of dollars was sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison on Monday, officials said.
Michael Scheff, a 51-year-old Oaklander who served in the military at Paterson, was convicted in May of civil rights violations and false reporting. Patterson’s five officers have already pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from a lengthy corruption investigation, and some officers said they routinely handed him some of the stolen funds. Chef, who has pleaded not guilty, was sentenced to 33 months in prison and must serve three years of supervised release after his release. His five other officers were all sentenced last week, and from probation he was sentenced to 24 months in prison.
