Two women in Utah survived a mountain lion attack last weekend while running through a canyon east of Salt Lake City.
They came across the puma Sunday morning as they turned the corner on a trail run in Mill Creek Canyon on Sunday morning, according to Faith Jolly, spokesperson for the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources. She said she pounced on the nearest woman and left two puncture wounds on her leg.
After an unharmed woman threw a rock at the puma, they were able to escape and descend the mountain. The woman’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Jolie said.

Wildlife officials later found and euthanized the puma, which was believed to have been attacked.
Jolly said mountain lion attacks are very rare in this part of Utah.
