A Cessna plane crashed into a home in Minnesota, Minnesota, killing three people in their early 30s who were on board the small plane.
Minnesota federal and local officials are investigating the scene in Hermantown, located just west of Duluth and about 150 miles north of Minneapolis.
Authorities described the victims as two men from Burnsville and a woman from St. Paul. Their names have not been released.
A statement from the Hermantown Police Department said that after being notified by Duluth International Airport that a small plane had crashed on the second floor of a residential building, officers responded shortly before midnight.
The final position of the four-seat Cessna 172 was about 1 to 1.5 miles south of the airport, according to the control tower. Emergency responders eventually found the wreckage in the backyard of his property on the 5100 block of Arrowhead Road, police said.
Hermantown Police said the single-engine plane crashed into the second floor of the house before falling and coming to rest in the backyard. The two residents of the house were not injured.

Investigators are still piecing together what may have caused the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have said they are investigating the incident.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area.
