A giant 170-carat pink diamond found in Angola is reportedly the largest diamond found in 300 years.
The diamond, called “Luro Rose,” was found Wednesday in the riverbed of the Luro Alluvial Diamond Mine. The diamond mine is owned by the Lucapa Diamond Company.
The size and rarity of the color of the diamond make the stone valuable, but it is unknown how much it will sell for because of its color.
Lucapa CEO Stephen Wetherall told The Associated Press:
The company is looking for a primary source of diamonds, Wetherall said in a press release. Lulo is an alluvial mine, where stones are recovered from riverbeds.
“We’re looking for kimberlite pipes that brought these diamonds to the surface,” says Wetherall. “Finding these large, high-value diamonds is sure to add excitement from our vantage point in our search for primary sources.”
The Lulo mine employs about 400 people and is responsible for two of the country’s largest diamond discoveries, including a 404-carat clear diamond.

The pink gem is the fifth largest diamond discovered by the company, with 27 stones weighing over 100 carats.

The pink diamonds will be sold in international tenders by Sodiam, the state-owned diamond marketing company of Angola. Angola’s mines have made him one of the top ten diamond producing countries in the world.
“This record-setting and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Louro continues to demonstrate that Angola is a significant player on the global diamond mining stage, demonstrating its commitment to and investment potential in the growing diamond mining industry. It shows quality and reward,” said Angola’s Minerals Minister Diamantino Azevedo. Resources, Oil and Gas said, according to Lucapa’s website.

Pink diamonds are impressively sized, but many clear diamonds are over 1,000 carats. Discovered in South Africa in 1905, the Cullinan diamond weighs 3,106 carats and is housed in a British scepter.
