A juror who has overseen the trial of the men charged with the 1996 disappearance and presumed death of California college student Christine Smart said Monday that prosecutors are due Monday in a case that has angered the public for decades. I heard the official’s closing arguments.
Smart was a 19-year-old college student at Caltech in 1996 when he disappeared after an off-campus party. It’s been more than 26 years since he was last seen with Smart, and his father, Paul Flores, has been on trial for months.
Flores, now 45, was charged with Smart’s murder. His 81-year-old father, Ruben Flores, was charged with running a side business after the fact.
From among more than 1,500 Monterey County residents, a panel assigned to Paul Flores and two jurors assigned to his father were selected to oversee each case separately and simultaneously.
