At least three people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion during evening prayers at a mosque in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Wednesday.
“Following today’s blast, we admitted 27 patients to the War Victims Surgery Center in Kabul, including five minors, one of whom was a 7-year-old boy.” said Stefano Sozza, Afghanistan director of the Italian NGO Emergencies. statement. “Two patients arrived dead and one died in the emergency room.”
The death toll could be much higher. A security official told Al Jazeera that the blast killed 20 people.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban government, tweeted that the blast occurred in the Khail-Khana district in northwest Kabul.

General Kenneth MacKenzie, commander of U.S. Central Command, warned earlier this year that further attacks by ISIS could be expected in the summer.
“We’re coming out of winter, and traditionally we’re going to start the fighting season,” Mackenzie told the Senate in March. “We expect ISIS attacks to intensify in Afghanistan as we head into the summer.”
