Italian officials say at least six people died on Sunday after a glacier collapse in the Northern Italian Alps caused an avalanche.
According to the BBC, eight others were injured during the avalanche, two of whom were seriously injured.
Helicopters and rescuers were sent to the site of the collapse.
“Unfortunately, five people were found dead,” paramedic spokesman Michela Canobal told AFP, “the numbers remain provisional.”

“Snow, ice and rock avalanches hit access roads on the road when there were some rope-tied parties, some of which were washed away,” Canova said. “The definitive number of mountaineers involved is not yet known,” she added.
“We saw dead (people) and huge ice cubes, rocks,” said one rescuer, Luigi Felicetti.

Paramedics in the collapsed area said it was believed that 15 people were in a hiking group.
The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but rescue team spokesman Walter Milano said the area of the collapse has recently become hot.

“It’s extremely hot,” Milan said. “Obviously that’s something unusual.”
