Iran has summoned British and Norwegian ambassadors as protests over the death of a young woman in police custody continue to rock the country.
Iran’s foreign ministry said on Sunday it had summoned Simon Sharkliffe, the British ambassador to Iran, to protest Saturday for hosting a London-based Persian-language news outlet critical of the Iranian regime. rice field.
The ministry alleges that the media outlets have caused the disturbance and considers the reporting to be interference in Iran’s internal affairs and an act against its sovereignty.
The state-run IRNA news agency also reported that the ministry had summoned the Norwegian ambassador to Iran to strongly protest recent statements by Norwegian parliamentary speaker Masud Galahani.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died in police custody after being arrested by Tehran’s morality police earlier this month on suspicion of wearing a loose Muslim headscarf. Police said she died of a heart attack and that she was not abused, but her family questions why.
Her death caused unrest throughout the Iranian province and the capital of Tehran. As of Sunday, protests over her death have spread to at least her 46 cities, towns and villages in Iran. A member of the Basij, a volunteer unit of the Iranian Guard, was killed by protesters in Tehran on Saturday night, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. Another member of his Basij, who has been in a coma since Thursday after a street crash, died Sunday in Urmia, West Azerbaijan province, IRNA reports.
Amini’s death sparked outrage from Western countries and the United Nations, as well as solidarity protests abroad. Five protesters were arrested after police threw stones at a violent street demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in London on Sunday. A number of police officers were injured in the skirmishes, but none were serious.

Pro-government rallies were also held in several cities across Iran on Sunday. Thousands took part in a rally in the capital’s Engerab, or Revolution Square, waving Iranian flags.
