Indiana high school students earned perfect marks on their advanced placement calculus AB exams this spring. This is the only student in the world who has achieved such a feat.
Felix Zhang, now a senior at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, passed the test with a score of 108 out of 108.
The College Board, which administers the AP exams, has announced that Principal Sean Galliha Chan has received a perfect score of 5. This is because the AP exam is scored from 1 to 5.
“This outstanding achievement may be a direct reflection of the highest quality education offered at Pennsylvania high schools,” Trevor Packer, director of advanced placement programs, said in an email to the principal. “I commend Felix for his hard work and AP teachers who are able to engage students and perform well in college-level courses.”

Zhang was one of 270,000 students worldwide to take the AP exam in May 2022. He was still in second grade. At the time, about 20% of students who took the test scored 5 on him, the highest percentage since 2016.
“I was pretty confident because I knew what to do on the test, but there was always the possibility of making a small error or something,” he told reporters. “There are many strategies teachers can take to help their students learn,” Galiher said in a press release. “But when you have a child who scores a perfect 5, you know the curriculum is purposeful, focused, the kids are engaged, and there is a supportive environment.”

“If you take an AP calculus course in high school, you are basically taking first year calculus as a college student.
