The Boston Fire Department praises the “heroic work” by its neighbors. Authorities say they saved a mother and her two children from the raging three-alarm blaze.
The fire broke out around 12:10 am on Saturday at a 2.5-story building in the city’s Rosslyndale neighborhood.
“Heroic work by a neighbor who saved a mother and her two children trapped upstairs from a three-alarm fire on Delford Street,” the Boston Fire Department said in a tweet. “When he caught a 5-year-old that his mother had dropped on him through the window, he put the mattress down so they could jump.”

The conflagration is estimated to have caused $1 million in damage to the building.
The Boston Fire Department said “radiant heat from the massive fire melted the siding of the adjacent building.”

Ultimately, five adults and four children were forced to evacuate as a result of the fire. Two firefighters were slightly injured while fighting the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The Boston Fire Department said, “With quick decisions by Command staff and coordinated efforts by the Fire Alarm Department, firefighters were able to aggressively attack the fire internally and externally and contain the fire in a single building. I was there,โ he said. “Thank you for your hard work!”
