Hackers allegedly stole the records of one billion Chinese residents from Shanghai police. This could be the biggest data breach in Shanghai’s history.
A post on the hacker’s hotspot, the Bleach Forum, contains information on “a billion Chinese residents and billions of incident records,” for a total of 10 Bitcoins (about $ 200,000). It is sold at.
A poster named Chinadan said on Sunday that the mountain of information contained “name, address, birthplace, national ID number, mobile phone number, details of all crimes / incidents.”
The post remains unconfirmed, but it is of great interest both in China and abroad. Users of China’s Weibo and WeChat platforms have expressed great concern and distress about the truth of the claim.

The bleach forum poster analyzed a sample of the data and discussed reliability, mainly because of the asking price of such valuable information.

Kendra Schaefer, a partner at consultancy Trivium China, said the breach was “bad for many reasons” if it proved to be genuine.
“Most obviously, this will be one of the biggest and worst violations in history,” Schaefer wrote on Twitter. “Two China’s Personal Information Protection Acts just came into force at the end of last year. Government agencies are required to protect citizens’ information, but if the source is actually MPS, MPS will do this. I could not do it.”
Schaefer shares the record as “including details of the minor case file,” and the breach also violates the Minor Protection Act.
“It would be surprising if the files of celebrities and minor officials weren’t included,” she wrote.

One of the reasons the breach may contain a lot of information is that the Shanghai police will have access to a national data sharing system, giving them more information than local police authorities. ..
