Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly announced Thursday that he will run for a vacant seat on the court next year, after serving four years before losing the 2020 election.
The race determines majority control of the court.
Conservative Kerry joins two liberals who previously announced their candidacy. They are Dane County Circuit Judge Everett Mitchell and Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Janet Protasiewicz.
Those with the top two votes in the February primary will advance to the April election.

Elections are officially nonpartisan, but candidates are usually lined up along ideological lines. Current Justice Pat Rogensack is about to retire rather than seek his 10-year term for his third term. She has a majority of her four court conservatives in her seven court.

Kelly was appointed to court by the then-government in 2016. Republican Scott Walker. Kelly served until 2020 when he lost to Jill Karofsky.

Protasiewicz’s campaign manager, Alejandro Verdin, called Kelly a “radical right-wing extremist” with a partisan agenda, which he said contrasted well with Protasiewicz.
