The first great white shark of the 2022 season was tagged off Cape Cod.
In collaboration with the Atlantic White Shark Reserve, Dr. Gregory Skomal of the Massachusetts Department of Marine and Fisheries injected the tag.
“Sharks are outside the northern cove of Chatham and are estimated to be 12 feet long,” the Massachusetts Reserve wrote.

Tags are used to monitor sharks and study their behavior.
Conservancy’s Sharktivity app allows users to track confirmed and unconfirmed shark sightings from Cape Cod.

The app shows that in the last two days, known sharks such as Warren and Terp have been witnessed and detected 15 times in the area.
Conservancy states that the increased presence of great white sharks near the beach off Cape Cod is associated with a surge in seal populations.
Gray seals are the preferred food source for great white sharks and have re-colonized the area.
