Mexico needs to do more to fight the fentanyl crisis that plagues the United States, the head of the US Drug Enforcement Department told Fox News’ Bill Hemmer.
“We know that most of it comes from Mexico and is openly synthesized,” said DEA administrator Anne Milgram on Friday’s “American News Room.” Said inside.
“And Mexico-they know it’s happening, we know it’s happening, and they need to work to stop it.”
According to the DEA Intelligence Report, the fentanyl crisis began almost 10 years ago and was illegally distributed in North America in 2014. Since then, the pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution ecosystem has become increasingly complex, involving India and China in the process.
California Fentanyl Bust: Federal Government seizes up to $ 20 million worth of 1 million counterfeit tablets
Mexico has a headline because it is close to the United States, but China plays a major role in Fentanyl’s supply chain. The 2019 DEA has labeled China as “a major source of fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances shipped by international mail and a major source of all fentanyl-related substances shipped to the United States.” did.
“Chemicals come from China,” Milgram said. “Since then, it has been manufactured in Mexico and openly manufactured nationwide. Last year, we seized 20 million counterfeit tablets and 15,000 pounds of fentanyl.”
“This is a potential lethal dose of 440 million fentanyl that was already seized last year,” she added. “This year, we have already seized more than 20 million fake tablets so far.”
This increasingly diversified international fentanyl ecosystem makes the problem of tackling a crisis much more difficult. The United States has to rely on cooperation with other countries, and the results are mixed.
According to the 2020 Brookings Report, Beijing worked to ban 175 chemicals associated with the production of synthetic drugs, 26 of which were fentanyl-related and some were “precursors.” However, cooperation between law enforcement agencies in China and Mexico, and with the United States, remains minimal.

Milgram discussed two major Mexican drug cartels that are responsible for most of the distribution of fentanyl to the United States. She said she was a new generation cartel (CJNG) in Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and poisoned Americans “at record speeds.”
“Last year, we lost 107,622 Americans,” she explained. These two cartels are primarily responsible for the fentanyl and methamphetamines that are flooding the United States and killing people. ”
“These two cartels are basically used in China and we are buying these chemicals that we are currently using to make fentanyl and methamphetamine,” she continued. “These are no longer plant-based medicines. This is a deadly drug threat, unlike what we have seen so far in our country.”
The international nature of this issue makes it difficult for US authorities to tackle without the help of foreign allies. Derek Maltz, a former director of the DEA Special Operations Department, told Fox News Digital that education remains the best tool government agencies need to fight the home front crisis.

“Education is important, but more importantly, we are raising a lot of money for opioid addiction. The White House has announced a new strategy to provide more resources for opioid addiction. This is great because people need to be treated. It’s an addiction. ”
“We need to provide mental illness services to addicts. We need to help rehabilitate those who are dependent on opioids,” he added. “But we never treat or educate a 13-year-old child in the morgue. It’s too late. Therefore, we have to be more urgent.”
Milgram reiterated the value of educating the general public and equipping parents to discuss problems with their children, especially since fentanyl is a “transformer” that can appear “on any drug.”
