An electrical malfunction caused a rapid fire and damage to one of Philadelphia’s most famous cheesesteak restaurants last week, authorities said.
More than 125 firefighters and other first responders responded to the fire at Jim’s Steak on South Street on Friday morning and fought for more than four hours to extinguish it. Officials said all employees were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.
The Philadelphia Fire Department said Monday that the fire department “determined that the electrical wiring was the cause.”

Owner Ken Silver told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the air conditioner was malfunctioning that morning. He said city inspectors had determined the building was structurally sound and that the damage was less than he had initially feared, and vowed to rebuild.
