The Chinese Ministry of Defense said in a statement late Sunday that Chinese troops had successfully intercepted in-flight ballistic missiles.
According to The Washington Times, a Chinese statement revealed that the test was inherently defensive and not intended to pose a threat to any country.
This development begins with China becoming more and more aggressive towards Taiwan, an independent island nation that has long claimed to be its territory.
China has sent numerous bomber and fighter flights to Taiwan’s air defense identification zone in recent months. The United States maintains friendly relations with Taiwan, but has not explicitly pledged to intervene if China chooses to invade Taiwan.

The United States maintains a complex relationship with Taiwan, making it the largest international supporter and arms supplier without formal diplomatic relations. The United States will continue to comply with Taiwan Relations Act. The Taiwan Relations Act recognizes, but does not support, the claim that China owns the island.

President Joe Biden has been confused about this issue several times, but the White House had to repeatedly clarify its promise of support to Taiwan.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen announced on May 31 that the Armed Forces had signed a “cooperation” agreement with the National Guard. Tsai Ing-wen announced during a visit by Senator Tammy Duckworth of D-Ill.
“The Pentagon is now actively planning cooperation between US National Guard and Taiwanese defense forces,” Tsai said at the time. “We look forward to closer and deeper cooperation between Taiwan and the United States on regional security issues.”
