President Joe Biden is about to win the long-awaited victory in this week’s visit to the Middle East. His presidency has been ragged by recent Supreme Court defeats, inflation, fears of recession, and a solid approval rating in the country. Globally, the president is facing an energy crisis and the Russian-Ukraine war.
He may have a great opportunity: Iran nuclear deal.
Biden has had the opportunity to revive the deal, but he must first convince uneasy Israeli and Saudi officials that it is effective in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
Biden will begin his trip when he lands in Israel on Wednesday and will begin his three-day visit to Israel. His discussions on Iran’s nuclear deal are expected to be central to the meetings he has held with Israeli authorities.
Former Israeli Officer: The resurgence of Iran’s nuclear deal will have “unprecedented catastrophic consequences”
Biden is expected to learn more about the country’s new “Iron Beam” missile defense system during his stay in Israel. He will also visit the Yadvashem Holocaust Memorial and be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom of Israel.
The president is also expected to join Israeli leaders in issuing the “Jerusalem Declaration,” which condemns Iran’s nuclear program and its ambitions to weaponize nuclear power.
According to Israeli officials, the Declaration states that the United States and Israel “use all elements of national power against Iran’s nuclear threat.”
The trip follows a Biden administration negotiator who failed to win a concession from Iran during a meeting in Qatar last month.
French Foreign Minister says “windows are closed” for Iran’s nuclear deal
On Friday, Biden traveled to Saudi Arabia, first landing in the port city of Jeddah, where he met King Salmanbin Abdulaziz Arsaud and Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Saudi Arabia continues to be dissatisfied with Biden’s desire to revive its agreement with Iran, and since Biden said it would “paria” the country for human rights abuses, the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia has been is nervous.
Biden’s relationship with Mohammed bin Salman is particularly tense as the president accuses him of murdering US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.
According to the White House, Biden is expected to announce his administration’s vision for the Middle East while in Jeddah.
UN: Iran removes 27 surveillance cameras at nuclear facility
In 2015, when Biden was Vice President of the United States, he oversaw the adoption of Iran’s nuclear deal mediated by President Barack Obama. At that time, Middle Eastern countries set aside differences to score what many experts called historical consensus.
But only three years later, then-President Donald Trump abandoned an agreement that he and critics were not sufficiently advanced to discourage Iran from securing nuclear weapons.
The nuclear agreement included the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China, and the European Union.
