South African officials are consulting with the Toxicology Institute after 22 teenagers were found dead in a nightclub on Sunday.
According to local media, South African officials confirmed that each of the 22 deaths was a minor, with the youngest being 13 years old. Police minister Bheki Cele denied the theory that the dead were caused by stampede and told reporters outside the nightclub on Sunday that the victims showed no signs of trauma.
The results of the toxicological analysis have not yet been published.
Sele further accused the owners of nightclubs in East London from admitting minors and apparently serving them alcohol. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reflected his feelings in a statement that the club should have been “off limits” to minors.
