An unusual experiment allowed French tax authorities to discover thousands of undeclared pools. artificial intelligence.

Antoine Magnan, deputy director of the National Finance Agency, told French media that he was “particularly aiming for extensions like verandas”. “But we want the software to be able to find buildings with large footprints, not kennels or children’s playhouses.”

French newspaper Le Parisien calculated that an average pool of 322 square feet would be taxed at €200 a year. Additionally, there were an estimated 3.2 million private pools in European states in 2020, with installations skyrocketing at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The crackdown on undeclared pools comes as France deals with one of the worst documented droughts that left many parts of the country without drinking water. The BBC notes that last month France had one of the driest months since 1961, with just 0.38 inches of rain.
