Security cameras give us peace of mind that our homes and valuables are safe when we are out. Doorbell cameras can be a great deterrent for sneaky thieves. The holidays are fast approaching, Tap or click here for our best advice on keeping your packages safe.
However, it is not failsafe. Scammers can jam Wi-Fi-connected video doorbells and rob you before you know what happened. Rare but possible. Tap or click to track them in a smart way.
Luckily, there are steps you can take to protect your device that protects you.
1. You made it cheap.
We all want to save money, but when it comes to technology, choosing the cheapest option is never wise. Cheaper brands are also more likely to cut corners when it comes to security.
The features that I think are important are:
Audio recording and HD video (I wish I had this in case something happens and I need footage)
A privacy shutter that covers the lens when you don’t want the camera to shoot
Storage for at least 7 days
Regular security and firmware updates

my choice is Simply Safe, my show sponsor. I prefer the DIY option where I can order everything I need online and set it all up myself without paying installation fees or expensive annual contracts.
When it comes to savings These 5 mistakes are like flushing cash down the toilet.
2. Plugged in and got it working.
Repeat later: default password Must will be changed. This step is important even for security systems and stand-alone cameras.
There is no excuse for using weak passwords. Even if you don’t pay for a password manager, major browsers have built-in tools to generate and store unique passwords.
If you use a password manager, make sure it uses at least 256-bit encryption and two-factor authentication.
Another option is to use an online password generator to create something virtually unguessable. You can write this down digitally (rather than on your desktop) or in a paper notebook. Keep this away from your computer.
Tap or click to find one of the best free password generator sites.
3. Ignore the update.
You are accustomed to updating your smartphone or computer. The same should be done for the rest of the connected devices.
Updates improve functionality and usability, but more importantly, they often make your device more secure. Automatic updates are usually on by default, but you should go in and check every now and then to make sure you’re protected.
You can check the software version from the app on your device. For example, open the app account > Firmware update If you have a Wyze system. Here you can ensure that each device has the latest software. Otherwise, Upgrade all bottom option.
We get a lot of questions about security cameras, but even more so what to do if you suspect someone is spying on your phone. Tap or click to find signs that hackers can see everything you do.
Bonus mistake: I forgot about my router.

Router settings affect everything connected to Wi-Fi, including security cameras. Make sure you are locked.
Here are some helpful tips:
Keep your router up to date like any other device in your home.
A good router should have strong encryption. The older standard is Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2). Newer devices use the excellent WPA3. If it’s been years since you updated your route, take a quick quiz to find out which model is right for your home.
A built-in firewall is standard on most routers manufactured in the last decade. You can tweak the settings to customize the data that goes in and out of your router, but be careful as it can make things worse.
Go to your router settings and disable remote access. If you need a tech, it’s not worth leaving. This setting is usually found in Remote Management.
