Two Jesuit priests were killed in the church and a man chased by shooters evacuated to a remote mountainous region in northern Mexico, the Mexican branch of the monastic order announced on Tuesday.
Javier Campos Morales and Joaquin Cesar Mora Salazar were killed in a church in Sero Kahui, Chihuahua, on Monday.
Violence has plagued the mountains of Tarahumara for years. Sero Kahui is near the meeting point of Chihuahua’s major drug-producing regions, Sonora and Sinaloa.
A statement from the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus in Mexico called for justice and the return of the human body. It said the shooters took them out of the church.

President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador said at his daily press conference on Tuesday that the priest appeared to have been killed by a shooter chasing another man trying to evacuate to church. The man was also killed, the president said.
Lopez Obrador said authorities have information on possible murder suspects and that there is a strong organized crime in the area.
For some reason, the Jesuit spokesman Nars Santibanez did not kill the third priest in the church, but pleaded for them to leave the bodies of two colleagues. He said he refused.
The surviving priest said his two colleagues were killed by gunshots at close range.
The priest’s killing has been a deep-seated tragedy in Mexico, at least since the start of the war on drugs in 2006.
Rev. Gilbert Guevara serves in the Aguililla parish in western Michoacan, a town that has been at the forefront of the cartel turf war for many years. In the last decade, three priests have been killed in the area.
“Danger is always there,” Guevara said of working in a cartel-controlled area. “They respect us as long as we don’t get in the way. As long as we help them, the government respects them.”
