Two people have been charged with shooting dead a homeless amputee who was sleeping in a wheelchair in south Los Angeles, officials said Thursday.
Rubi Angiano Salazar, 37, and Raymundo Hernández, 34, were charged with the murder of 69-year-old Jerrold Riperez on May 17, authorities said.

Prosecutors claimed Riperez was sleeping outside a McDonald’s restaurant when Salazar approached and shot him in the head. He died in hospital five days later.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement that the killing was “disturbingly brutal and callous.”
Hernandez and another man were arrested on Tuesday, but the other man has not been charged pending further investigation, officials said.
Salazar is already in custody on other charges, police said.

Salazar has also been charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Prosecutors allege Salazar shot a 67-year-old woman in the back at a bus stop four days after Riperez was shot.
Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Salazar and Martinez had lawyers who could speak on their behalf.
