Jazz is always in flux — engrossed in its history and constantly seeking new turf. In New York these days, it literally means infiltrating new types of spaces (apartments, nightclubs, etc.) far from the mainstream of jazz clubs.
This phenomenon is so far, but it’s actually part of a long history of tension in the genre that music is most at home and most likely to grow. Some artists tend to prefer traditional, sacred places. Others actively reject those rooms. And yet others are trying to inject outsider Frisson into traditional spaces.
In this week’s pop cast, we’ll talk about where jazz has historically found a home and where jazz is spilling. Musicians actively challenge the old hierarchy. And the career of Meghan Stabile, a positive jazz promoter who died this month at the age of 39.
The guests:
-
Giovanni Russonello covering the New York Times jazz
-
Nate Chinen, editorial director of WBGO, author of “Playing Changes: Jazz for the New Century”
