On Wednesday night, Jessica Pegula lost to No. 1 seed Iga Swiertek in the quarterfinals of the US Open in Flushing, Queens.
Swiatek did what it took to finish in straight sets 6-3, 7-6.
Pegula was much better in the second set, but Swirtek simply finished the game on the same level.
“We try to keep our expectations low,” Swirtek said after the semifinal match. Despite being the top seed, she didn’t expect to get there.

With the crowd behind him, Pegula turned his back to the wall in the second set to enter the tiebreaker, where he lost 4-2 to Siwiatek. But in the end he went 5-4 in favor of Swiatek.
Pegula fell short when Swiatek scored the winning serve and Pegula took the shot.

Pegula would have been the youngest American player to reach the semifinals at the US Open since Serena Williams’ triumph.
Swiatek has won all of his matches in straight sets, except for his Round 16 match against Germany’s Jules Niemeyer.
She will play sixth-seeded Alina Sabalenka of Belarus on Thursday. Tunisia’s No. 5 Onz Jabbar, who defeated Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals, and No. 17 Carolina Garcia will meet in another semifinal on Thursday.

The women’s singles final is scheduled for Saturday at 4pm at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The only American left at the US Open is men’s Francis Tiafoe.
