Days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi outraged China with a trip to the autonomous island, a group of five US lawmakers landed in Taiwan on Sunday for another high-level visit.
Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass leads an unannounced delegation. A group of lawmakers will meet with Taiwanese officials throughout Sunday. China has condemned such visits in the past, but has yet to issue a statement regarding Marquee’s group.
Other members of the delegation include Democrats. John Garamendi of California. Alan Lowenthal of California. Don Beyer of Virginia and Republican Rep. Amata Radewagen of American Samoa.

China has long claimed Taiwan as its own territory, even though Taiwan is democratic and autonomous.
The Chinese military conducted large-scale live-fire exercises around Taiwan the week after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
The Chinese government claims the top-level visit violates the US “One China” policy, which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as China’s sole government.

Pelosi was the highest-level US official to visit Taiwan since House Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997.
A group similar to Marquee’s delegation also landed unexpectedly in Taiwan in April, including Republican Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Ben Sasse of Nebraska.
