US doctors from the American Medical Association are working with the FDA to make oral contraceptives available to women without a prescription.
AMA, America’s largest medical association, called at its annual meeting, which ended on Friday. The organization states that women should be able to contracept over-the-counter because the Supreme Court is likely to overturn the Roe v. Wade case and the planned parent-child relationship v. Casey case.
“Providing patients with access to contraceptives to OTC is easy to call from a public health perspective, as the health risks of pregnancy far outweigh the risks of using oral contraceptives.” AMA Board member David H. Aizuss, MD wrote in an official statement.
“Access is one of the reasons why patients do not use, inconsistently, or discontinue use of oral contraceptives. Expanding OTC access makes it easier for patients to use oral contraceptives properly and plans. There will be less pregnancy outside, “he continued.
