Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time for a road trip.
Fox News Digital previously lived in a refurbished van and talked to some people traveling around the country about their important road trip items and tips that are perfect for the informal first weekend of summer.
Jasmine Wilson moved full-time to a refurbished van with his dog Ice on December 1, 2020. Her goal is to visit all the national parks in the United States. By last fall, she and Ice had visited about 15 national parks.

Wilson added to Fox News Digital that her best advice for people going on road trips is to be aware of their surroundings and enjoy the experience, and she “is trying to live in more moments.”
She also advised the Road Tripper to be very prepared. She doesn’t have to stop because she prioritizes safety items and snacks.
“It’s better to have more than you need, rather than not enough,” Wilson said. “I feel like there are limits to where I can overpack, but it’s always a good idea to be ready.”

Christine told Fox News Digital that the most important part of the road trip is planning and the expectation that things are likely to change.
“They say it’s not an adventure until everything goes wrong,” Christine told Fox.
“We choose a goal and then just follow the flow,” she added. “That’s the way to reach our goal destination, because you can find a lot of cool things along the way that you might not have known.”
Meanwhile, Will said the road trip is to enjoy “the little things along the way.”
“What makes your trip better is the small stops, small memories and small things you can make on your way to your main destination,” Will said.

According to Wilson and Watsons, there are some essential items for a road trip.
Snacks and water
Wilson and Watsons both said they always had a treat.
“Snack is a must,” Christine said.
Watsons said he usually has cutie oranges on hand because they don’t need to be refrigerated and are healthy. They also recommended keeping water handy.
“When changing altitude or altitude, it’s a good idea to sprinkle some water on it to rehydrate,” Will says.
Kristin especially recommends a water bottle with a filter, so you can easily get the water out of the sink.

Wilson said one of her favorite items in her van was the cooler. Specifically, Wilson has an Icybreeze cooler that also acts as an air conditioner. The cooler is battery operated and has vents to blow out cold air. Wilson said her dog Ice loves it.
“My dog literally sits in front of it and stays cool all day,” Wilson said.
Roadside assistance
At the top of Watsons’ list of must-have items was Roadside Assistance in case of an emergency such as a flat tire or out of gas.
Christine said: “This is a great layer of protection and is available for RVs and cars.”

Safety item
As a solo traveler, Wilson said that self-defense items like mace spray and emergencies like multi-tools are important.
“The two main things are to be aware of your surroundings and keep those safe things within reach,” Wilson said.
Roadtrippers app
Watsons told Fox News Digital that they are planning their trip using the Roadtrippers app. According to Christine, you usually choose the “ultimate destination” and the app will help you find other fun and interesting things along the way. And it will tell you how long you have to drive to get to those places.

Entertainment kit
Watsons also recommended keeping entertainment handy for both adults and children. Christine said she listens to audiobooks, podcasts, or great playlists while driving.
Meanwhile, they have toys for ROHM to play before reading her book or giving her a coloring book.
“As a last resort, she has an iPad, so if she’s too noisy and nothing else works, let her monitor it,” Christine said.

Wilson bought a dash comeback mirror because Wilson’s van has no back window or rearview mirror. It also acts as a backup camera for cars that don’t have that feature.
“It was very important,” Wilson said.
