Taylor Swift’s tenth studio LP, Midnights, was released on Friday and quickly became the best-selling album of the year. Swift is the rare pop star emerging from the pandemic era as strong as she was in the pandemic era.
But Swift is also nearing a career crossroads, working with the same producers and exploring familiar sonic ideas. She’s done albums before that felt a little dodgy, but it’s unclear if that was an outlier or an interim step she’s now withdrawing.
This week’s Popcast talks about Swift’s mid-career hiring, the current state of songwriting, and the roads she hasn’t taken yet.
