Garrett Schrader hit Oronde Gadsden II with a 25-yard touchdown pass to give Syracuse a 32-29 win over Purdue with 7 seconds remaining.
That touchdown throw capped off a wild fourth quarter for a dramatic lead change. Syracuse took his lead 10-9 after three quarters and outscored the Boilermakers 22-20 in the final period. Orange improved to his 3-0 and got off to its best start since 2018. Purdue he fell 1-2.
Aidan O’Connell’s 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Payne Durham with 51 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Boilermakers a 29-25 advantage and seemed to seal Purdue. .
O’Connell, who went on 38 of 54 passes for 415 yards and three touchdowns, scored twice in the fourth quarter to save the Boilermakers from a 10-point deficit. Charlie Jones caught his 11th pass for 188 yards and his 1 score.
But before these O’Connell heroics, Syracuse scored two touchdowns within nine seconds to lead 25-15 midway through the fourth quarter.
A scrambled 46-yard touchdown pass from Schrader to Gadsden at 4 and 1 gave Syracuse an 18–15 advantage after Schrader made a two-point conversion. That touchdown came with 8:17 left in the game.
On Purdue’s next possession, SU’s Jatius Gere wrapped around O’Connell as the Purdue quarterback attempted a pass. The ball staggered into the hands of Orange’s defensive end Caleb Okechukwu, who trotted 17 yards into the end into his zone.
Syracuse was leading 25-15 at the point, but O’Connell connected with favorite receiver Jones for the score 55 yards to bring the Boilermakers within 25-22 with 6:41 remaining. . Had Mitchell Finneran missed a 41-yard field goal with 2:54 left, he could have tied it.
The teams had only met once in 2004, when Purdue beat the Orange 51-0 at Ross Aid Stadium.

Purdue: Boilermakers have been unable to drive back Doerue King, who is treating a calf injury. Doerue scored three touchdowns in his first two games for Purdue, and in 18 attempts he rushed for 68 yards. Without him, the boilermakers struggled to get much done on the ground, but they could usually get a lot out of O’Connell. The Purdue quarterback spent a lot of time in the first half, throwing for 175 yards on 21 of 27 attempts. Syracuse put more pressure on him in the second half, but O’Connell was still able to throw well and deep.
Syracuse: Schroeder was one of the country’s most accurate passers in the first two games of the season (38-48, .792). He completed 4 of 10 passes for just 35 yards in the first half. He was much more effective in the second half, completing 9 of 19 passes for 146 yards and 3 touchdowns. Purdue locked up Syracuse and ran back Sean Tucker, who rushed 18 times for 42 yards.
