Directed by Jeff Baena, “Spin Me Round” is a quirky romp about worldly travelers traveling through their European fantasies. It follows the misadventures of Amber (Alison Brie), the manager of a chain spaghetti restaurant whose dreams are endless seas of factory-made Alfredo sauce. To Amber’s delight, she has a select group of employees (including Tim Heidecker, Zach Woods, Debby Ryan, Aiden Maeri, and Molly Shannon) give private lessons in identifying fresh herbs. Selected for a work retreat to receive. An Italian villa where Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola), the chain’s genteel founder, shoots an all-you-can-eat pasta commercial.
These rewards have proven to be as inauthentic as the company’s food. It blends nicely with the latest in sexual harassment screwball comedies that fell out of favor as soon as they were pasted. Bree plays her heroine, using her bitch eyes and innocent smile. Literally wooed and patronized in an erotic soiree that kicks off Park’s rendition of “The Lady In Red.” His attention hits her like Chianti on a cork, but she’s not convinced to swear it tastes bad.
Baena calls on composer Pino Donaggio and cinematographer Sean McElwee, who date back to 1970s Euro thrillers, to warn audiences not to take these hoaxes seriously. Amber’s arrival in Italy is greeted with the kind of epic symphony you’d expect to hear while listening to dumpster shots in a World War I romance. and details of it, particularly his strained relationship with clingy work colleague Deb (Molly Shannon), and his disgusted assistant Kat (Aubrey Plaza), who demands Americans go on dates with them. It has been pointed out that the strained relationship between boss. Plaza’s character makes it clear that this is a story about collusion and manipulation, but Baena keeps the tone silly and hardly scares when the creepy mask is visible. It’s satisfying — and we’re happy with the clever, needle-like drops that draw from Italo Disco and Giallo Horror Score.
