Tennis legend Serena Williams announced Tuesday that she intends to retire after the US Open.
This led to a surge in demand for tickets to the tournament.
USTA spokesperson Chris Widmeier told the New York Post that the news sparked “unprecedented” ticket sales on Tuesday.
“You talk about the Serena effect, it’s like a tsunami,” he said. [Tuesday], 13,000 tickets to the opening, including about 4,500 on opening night. “

Widmaier said selling 13,000 tickets in one day was a “great day.”
Prior to Tuesday, tickets for August 29, the first night of the tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium, were on sale for as low as $35. Currently, the admission price on Ticketmaster (only for confirmed resale as standard tickets are no longer available) is $81.55. You have to pay at least $123 to get along with someone else.

In fact, someone is now bold enough to sell two tickets for Section 317, Row X, Seats 13 and 14 for just $7,000 each on Ticketmaster’s confirmed resale.
