Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday at the age of 96, after a long life that saw her meet 13 different US presidents.
Elizabeth was a constant presence on the world stage, meeting American leaders even before she became queen. This is part of what she looked like when she met with the President of the United States.
The then-Princess Elizabeth met with President Harry Truman in 1951, one year before taking the throne. Elizabeth and Prince Philip met with the Truman family at Blair House during her DC visit to Washington that year.
Six years later, in October 1957, Queen Elizabeth spent four days at the White House. She and Prince Philip stayed with her President Dwight Eisenhower and Lady Mamie Eisenhower.
In 1961, the Queen hosted President John F. Kennedy and Lady Jacqueline Kennedy at Buckingham Palace.
The Queen never met President Lyndon Johnson, but her sister Princess Margaret did in 1965. The next president the Queen met was President Richard Nixon, whom she met with her spouse in England in 1970.
In 1976 Queen Elizabeth visited the United States to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States and danced with President Gerald Ford.
Almost a year later, the Queen met with President Jimmy Carter and other world leaders at a summit dinner at Buckingham Palace in May 1977.
In 1982, President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy Reagan visited Windsor Castle. During their stay, Reagan and Queen Elizabeth rode horses together.
The Queen visited the White House in 1991 and planted a tree with President George HW Bush on the South Lawn. This tree replaced another one she planted by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of George VI.
Among the Queen’s meetings with President Bill Clinton was a D-Day commemorative event at London’s Guildhall.
President George W. Bush met with then-Prime Minister Tony Blair after meeting Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 2003.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama met with the Queen and Prince Philip in April 2016. Two couples shared a private her lunch at Windsor.
Queen Elizabeth’s meeting with President Donald Trump will include a state banquet attended by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the Buckingham Palace event.
