Appropriately, “Onoda” slowly progresses through the life story of its central character. Onoda (played by Yuya Endo as a young man and Kanji Tsuda as an older iteration) begins the film as a failed kamikaze pilot. Taniguchi recruits Onoda to carry out a secret mission that Onoda must never surrender. In return, Taniguchi promises that his men will not be abandoned wherever they go.
This promise ignites Onoda’s faith in the jungle. Onoda becomes the leader of his group of four remaining soldiers after the American forces obliterate the unit on Luban Island. Based on his beliefs, the group awaits the Major’s return in the face of rain, starvation, and the increasingly bewildering defenses of local Filipino farmers.
Despite the film’s wartime setting, there is little talk of politics. In fact, it’s barely spoken. Instead, director Arthur Harari opts to draw on Onoda’s thinking to create a psychological portrait of his central character, using imagery rather than ideological descriptions. Taniguchi’s shirt shines in titanium white. The sun’s rays seem to hit your face like a spotlight. Film Training The unnatural, painterly quality of his sequences makes the impression indelible. This light silently and conveniently apolitically explains why a person can endure nearly 30 years (or in cinematic terms, he’s nearly 3 hours) without action.
