New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency on Friday after a poliovirus sample was found in Nassau County wastewater.
In the executive order, the governor cited recent polio detections and declining vaccination rates.
In a separate release, the New York Department of Health said the order would expand the network of polio vaccine administrators to include EMS workers, midwives and pharmacists.

Physicians and licensed nurses can also place non-patient-specific subscriptions for polio vaccines.
The order requires health care providers to send immunization data to the department through the New York State Immunization Information System (NYSIIS).
A case of paralytic polio was confirmed in a Rockland County resident, and poliovirus was detected in wastewater samples from Rockland, Orange, Sullivan, New York City, and now Nassau counties.

“Samples taken from Nassau County in August were genetically linked to previously confirmed cases of paralytic polio in Rockland County, providing further evidence of increasing community spread.” The health department explained: “All the samples reported are of concern, a form of the poliovirus that can cause paralysis in humans.”
