New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu rejected a bill on Friday allowing pharmacists to dispense the antiparasitic drug ivermectin to treat COVID-19 by permanent order without a prescription.
Some Americans are looking to ivermectin to treat the virus. This is a cheap medicine used to kill human and animal worms and other parasites. Health professionals and medical groups have warned that they can stop using the drug and cause harmful side effects, with little evidence of its usefulness.
Sununu said in a news release that there are currently only four cases in New Hampshire where pharmacists can dispense medicines without a prescription: quitting, contraception, substance use disorders and sexual assault.

He also said that ivermectin remains available to individuals when prescribed by a doctor.
“Patients must have a doctor before taking any medication so that they are fully aware of the potential unintended consequences of taking medications that may limit treatment options and other treatment options in the future. You need to talk to Mr. Sununu, “said Sununu.
The bill would also establish a committee to study the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19.
