On Tuesday night, Nashville city council members voted against a draft accord to host the 2024 Republican National Convention, effectively slamming the Tennessee capital in a battle with Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to host the Republican presidential nominating convention. Kami was defeated.
Tennessee’s Republican Governor Bill Lee and Republicans in the state legislature pushed hard for Nashville to host the convention, but the city’s Democratic-controlled Metro Council rejected the draft agreement. According to numerous local reports, only 10 of his MPs voted in favor, 22 against and 3 abstentions.
Milwaukee approved a resolution in June, and two weeks ago, the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) Site Selection Committee, which oversees planning for the 2024 convention, recommended Milwaukee over Nashville.
As the National Party Committee holds its summer meeting in Chicago, the committee will make a formal presentation to full members of the RNC in a closed session on Thursday. Full members of his RNC on Friday will vote in a public session to recommend that the hosting committee host the convention in Milwaukee.
