House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office announced early Sunday that she plans to visit at least four Asian countries during her trip to the region, but a stop in Taiwan was specifically ruled out.
Pelosi leads a congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region, which includes Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan. The visit will focus on mutual security, economic partnerships and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region, her office said in a press release.
“Today, our congressional delegation travels to the Indo-Pacific region to reaffirm America’s strong and unwavering commitment to our allies and friends in the region,” Pelosi said in a release.

“Our delegation will hold high-level conferences in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan to discuss how we share common interests and values, including peace and security, economic growth and trade, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. crises, human rights and democratic governance,” she continued.
“Under the strong leadership of President Biden, the United States understands that a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific is vital to our prosperity and that of the world,” Pelosi said. We are firmly committed to our involvement,” he added.
Congressional delegations include New York Rep. Gregory Meeks, California Rep. Mark Takano, Washington Rep. Susan Derbene, Illinois Rep. Raja Krishnamooti and New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim .
Pelosi’s announcement came after President Joe Biden said earlier this month that U.S. military officials thought Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was “not a good idea.”
The People’s Republic of China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory. The Chinese military has frequently sent aircraft into Taiwan’s airspace to test air defenses in the region, and the country has warned the United States against Pelosi’s visit. She will be the highest-ranking US official to visit the island county since 1997.
