Designers often don’t think these changes have anything to do with the planned obsolescence of fashion. Because it’s in the industry’s interest to get people to buy more. Our cultural and social attachment to physical ideals rooted in youth and thinness. And to some extent, it involves a lack of imagination. But really, clothes shouldn’t pose a problem. (There are enough variables in life to do that.) They have to work them out.
In this case, some do.
One of the positive developments from months of COVID-19 quarantine is the growing appreciation of comfort clothing components, such as stretchable materials and elastic waists that accommodate varying sizes. That’s it. They are no longer just for home wear or sportswear.
And the default position for most of us when shopping for clothes for weight changes is, hey! Change may only be temporary, and a more sensible approach involves a combination of acceptance and investment.
Ultimately, the most basic weapon in the fight to improve fashion’s role in climate change is storing and wearing your clothes longer. Concentrate on choosing clothes. literally.
