Max Scherzer got off to the worst start of the season.
The San Diego Padres stole the three-time Cy Young Award winner four times in a 7-1 win over the New York Mets.
The Padres got their power early on from an unlikely source. 271 slugging average since being traded to San Diego, a two-run shot off Scherzer put the Padres on the board early on. In the second inning, Trent Grisham hit a solo homer. Grisham’s slugging percentage was just . 193 in his last 39 games.

Scherzer calmed down a bit after that, but it all unraveled in the fifth. Jurickson Plofer fouled him off the pole and he hit a three-run homer to give San Diego his 6–0 lead. Two batters later, Manny Machado added a solo homer, and Buck Showalter scored Scherzer without waiting for Machado to touch home plate.Overall, he hit all homers in his 4.2 innings of work. allowed his 7 earned runs via . Scherzer was booed from the mound even though he never exceeded four runs in the starting lineup all season and was probably the biggest free agency his splash in history.

Aside from a solo home run by the bright red Eduardo Escobar (who also doubled), Yu Darvish kept the Mets’ bat quiet all night. He threw 7 innings of 1-run ball, 6 hits and 4 strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, the Mets threatened the big boys up as the lead ran, but Pete Alonso struck out and Daniel Vogelbach flew right to end the threat. A third base runner and a second base runner also appeared, but to no avail. They went 11-1 and put the runners in scoring position, but of course, because of San Diego’s home run, that’s pretty much a moot point.
The Mets led the NL East by 10.5 games on June 1, but lost the lead to the Atlanta Braves last weekend. Both teams he finished 101-61, but the Braves finished in tiebreaks, becoming NL East champions and giving the NLDS a direct bye.
