The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly the leading candidates for the Kyrie Irving sweepstakes, as the era of point guards in Brooklyn Nets seems to be over.
Irving chose the final year of his contract prior to the launch of the free agent, after failing to find a partner to facilitate sign-and-trade. However, it seems that Nets is also working on Irving’s deal, as Kevin Durant is demanding a deal.
NBA journalist Markstein wrote in his sub-stack column on Sunday that LeBron James is “working hard” for the Lakers to buy Irving.
James and Irving have a history. After the two led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA title in 2016, the two superstars dropped out and Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics. In May, Irving said he regrets the dispute with James that led to the division of the Cavaliers.

“During that time, we didn’t talk,” Irving told the “IAMATHLETE” podcast in May. “Repeat, looking back on my experience at the time, we both understood each other’s future, so I’d like you to do that. We had it together.
“It would have been worth it if I and he could run Cleveland together in the league and put together a better team each year.”

If the deal closes between the Nets and the Lakers, Yahoo Sports reported that Russell Westbrook could be traded in Brooklyn.

The two are allegedly optimistic that the deal could be closed. The Lakers are looking at Seth Curry in addition to Irving, Yahoo Sports reported.
